Eastman graduate and Rochester Classical Idol winner Kathryn Lewek reigns as one of the world's leading Queens of the Night in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute).

While in the theater, you hear snippets of conversations. While watching Eastman Opera Theatre’s production of Light in the Piazza, I overheard the following: “Where is the Bathroom? How long is intermission? Did you know Jill left Andy for another man?!” But over the hum of the Eastman Opera Theatre Orchestra tuning, I heard the five little words every aspiring classical vocalist shudders to hear: “Opera is a dying art.”

5/6        Alfano: Cyrano De Bergerac

The comedy/tragedy of Cyrano de Bergerac and his beloved Roxane, a love story for the ages, comes alive in this rediscovered operatic gem, which packs the power of full-blooded Italian verismo. The title role is a signature part for the charismatic star tenor Roberto Alagna, performing it with the company for the first time opposite Met favorite Patricia Racette, who plays his secret love. Marco Armiliato conducts.

5/13      Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier

Beethoven’s only opera—an ode to freedom, justice, and the human spirit—returns to the Met with a fine cast. Adrianne Pieczonka is Leonore, who, disguised as Fidelio, courageously fights for her husband Florestan’s freedom. Klaus Florian Vogt is Florestan, Greer Grimsley is Don Pizarro, and Falk Struckmann is Rocco. Sebastian Weigle conducts.
