Written in 1724, J. S. Bach's St. John Passion is part of the German Lutheran passion-oratorio tradition.  The passion narrative from the Gospel of John is recounted by the Evangelist (narrator), Jesus, Peter, Pilate and various servants.  In this performance, recorded at Asbury First United Methodist Church in March 2019, Rochester's chamber choir VOICES performs with soloists and orchestra, all under the direction of Dr. William Weinert.  Ruth Phinney is your host.

As a special Good Friday celebration, Performance Rochester is proud to present Bach's St. John Passion, in its entirety, with Voices under the direction of WilliamWeinert.  Founded by Weinert, Voices is a professional ensemble of some of western's New York's finest singers.

Sing Out, My Tongue: Masterpieces of the Renaissance was the theme for VOICES first concert of its 12th season, performed at Asbury First United Methodist Church on September 23, 2018.

Composer Josquin des Prez (c. 1440-1521) towered over the musical world in the years around 1500.  He was highly successful in courts and cathedrals in France, Italy and the Netherlands, and lauded by his fellow composers.

Voices is a professional chamber chorus consisting of western New York’s finest ensemble singers. They have appeared in concerts and broadcasts, performing music from the Renaissance through the twenty-first century. City Newspaper described the ensemble’s sound as “a sonic cloudburst,” and noted that “Voices marks a new era of choral vitality in Rochester.”
