In celebration of the life and work of Dr. Paul Burgett, Classical 91.5 aired the Backstage Pass that was broadcast live from the Gateways Music Festival in August 2017. Dr. Burgett was the Chairman of Gateways’ Board of Directors.

Julia Figueras was live at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre with the entire GMF orchestra, guest artists, and a live audience.  Music Director Michael Morgan, RPO trumpeter Herb Smith, pianist Stewart Goodyear, and violinist Amadi Azikiwe were among the guests who chatted with Julia, along with GMF Board President Paul Burgett and Artistic Director Lee Koonce and Eastman School of Music Dean Jamal Rossi.

Music on the program includes Adolphus Hailstork's An American Port of Call and the final movement of Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto.

To those who knew him, Paul Burgett was a professional encourager.

In the video below, see him tell his story.

It starts with his arrival as a student at the Eastman School of Music in 1964, where he entered what he called the "fiery furnace."

Paul Joseph Burgett earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester. His Ph.D. dissertation treated the aesthetics of the music of Black Americans, a subject that continues to occupy him as a teacher and scholar. He currently serves as Vice President and General Secretary and Senior Advisor to the President at the University of Rochester. As a faculty member in the College music department, he teaches courses in the History of Jazz and the Music of Black Americans.
