So much great teaching takes place in music school and conservatories across the country, where students are trained to teach the next generation.  American conductor and former Music Director of the RPO David Zinman spoke with WXXI’s Brenda Tremblay about the conductor he met at Tanglewood.  Maestro Zinman says the legendary Pierre Monteux changed his life.

In November 2016, American conductor David Zinman, whose career has been distinguished by a wide-ranging repertoire, a commitment to contemporary music, and the introduction of historically informed performance practice, was appointed Distinguished Visiting Artist at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester.

ROCmusic founder Alexander Peña says he has a dream for our city’s youngest musicians.

ROCmusic is an innovative arts-outreach program that engages children and their families in the experience of making and appreciating classical music. The program is designed to instill a love of learning, responsibility, respect, and academic success, ultimately positively affecting social change in our students and the communities surrounding them.

Sean Jefferson is a drummer who taught for a couple years in public schools, then went out on his own as a private music teacher.   He spoke to Mona Seghatoleslami about an often overlooked part of learning music.

If you know how to physically move with your instrument, you get the most out of it with the least effort, and you make the instrument work for you, rather than you working for the instrument.

Sean Jefferson is the founder of the Rochester Contemporary School of Music.

Music and art go hand in hand, and there’s a local art teacher who has a unique way of inspiring his students.   Art teacher Todd Stahl believes in the power of art – and every day he takes that spirit into his classroom in the Webster school district.  By treating his students as equals he empowers them to believe in their work. WXXI’s Sasha-Ann Simons has more.

This month, in the small, rural Byron-Bergen Jr. Sr. High School, an audience will see the world premiere of a new musical called “10 Again.”  It was written by the school’s choir director, Larry Tallman.   The students are pretty excited.  Tenth grader Stephanie Buell says being in high school musicals with Mr. Tallman has been a revelation.

Stephanie is also one of our Musicians of Rochester.
