Concierto is a weekly program of classical music presented in Spanish and English. The program features classical music by Latin American and Spanish composers and musicians.

Bandoneon player, composer, arranger and musical director, Daniel Binelli has had an outstanding international career. He was for 10 years a member of Osvaldo Pugliese's Orchestra and later joined the "Orquesta de Atilio Stampone" and the "Orquesta del Tango de Buenos Aires" as a bandoneon soloist. In 1989 he was invited by Astor Piazzolla to join Piazzolla's New Tango Sextet with which he toured widely in Europe and Latin America. Today Binelli is widely acclaimed as the foremost exponent and torchbearer of the music of Astor Piazzolla.

This time on Concierto the music ranges from traditional Spanish coplas sung by tenor Plácido Domingo, to a Mexican guitar sonata by Manuel Ponce, and Mozart performed live by the black and Latino musicians of the Sphinx Virtuosi. Frank Dominguez is your host.

This week Concierto honors the “Father of Modern Mexican Song,” Manuel Ponce. Selections include his beloved standard Estrellita sung by Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez. In the second hour we salute Argentine pianist Martha Argerich displaying her artistry performing de Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain.

This week European vocalist Mariza sings an example of a Portuguese song form called “fado,” and then we’ll hear the Brazilian derivation, the modinha by Heitor Villa-Lobos. Frank Dominguez is your host.

Fado is a traditional Portuguese musical genre that combines a narrative vocal style with acoustic guitar accompaniment.  Learn more.

This week legendary mother and daughter sopranos Monsterrat Caballé and Montserrat Martí perform solo and together, also sibling guitarists Pepe and Angel Romero play a “Madrigal Concerto” by Joaquín Rodrigo.

Esta semana sopranos legendarios que son madre e hija, Montserrat Caballé y Montserrat Martí, tienen actuaciones en solitario y en conjunto, también los guitarristas que son hermanos, Pepe y Ángel Romero, tocan un “Concierto Madrigal ” por Joaquín Rodrigo.

This edition of Concierto is all about the tango, with music from the 20th century “father of new tango,” Astor Piazzolla, as well as more recent works by Jose Bragato and Miguel del Águila. Three-time Grammy nominated American composer Miguel del Aguila was born 1957 in Montevideo, Uruguay.
