Why do we celebrate Black History Month?

Feb 9, 2021

Paul Burgett

The late Paul Burgett recorded this reflection during the Obama years in the white house.  It is a reflection on the importance of celebrating the contributions of African Americans, during Black History Month and all year long.  His comments are as relevant today as they were when he recorded this video.

Here is the late Dean Paul Burgett, a scholar of African-American music and vice president of the University of Rochester. He recounts the origins of Black History Month and explains why the celebration remains relevant and necessary, even with an African-American president in the White House, and why we are all much better for it and, in fact, I think we are better Americans for it.
