Oct 1, 2018

Host Christopher O'Riley brings From the Top close to home, featuring the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in his 10/14.

10/7      This documentary-style episode of NPR’s From the Top takes listeners backstage at the prestigious Stulberg International String Competition in Kalamazoo, Michigan to hear an 18-year-old violinist from Chicago, a 15-year-old cellist from New York City, and two 16-year-old violinists from Seattle.

10/14      From Kleinhan’s Music Hall in Buffalo, New York, we join the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in an exciting episode that features four concerto movements with teenage soloists. Plus Christopher O’Riley joins with Buffalo Philharmonic Concertmaster Dennis Kim in a rousing Brahms Horn Trio with an outstanding 18-year-old French Horn player.

10/21    Recorded live in Las Vegas for the very first time, this week’s episode comes from the Smith Center and features an outstanding cast of young musicians from Nevada and beyond. A piano duo performs an electrifying piece for four-hands, a teenage guitarist shares his incredibly moving story about fleeing from his home country to study music in America, and a 13-year-old violinist wows the audience with two high-flying pieces.

10/28    From the Media Arts Center at Roxbury Community College, this episode was taped for kids from Conservatory Lab Charter School in Boston, and features the Chicago-based teenage trombone quartet The Bone Rangers, as well as a young violinist who skipped his own high school graduation to appear on From the Top.
